Lori Knapp has literally grown up in the wine business. In her early years, she spent summers with her father at his winery in the Finger Lakes region of New York, while the rest of her year was spent with her mother in the Republic of Panama. The combination of working in her father’s vineyards and living in a Spanish speaking country during those formative years is what prepared her for adult success in California’s wine country.
Attending the University of South Carolina, Lori completed her degree in journalism; but, decided to join her father’s staff as a full-time winery employee upon graduation. Having only visited New York during her summers, Lori found winters in New York to be a “reality check.” After a week’s visit to Sonoma County wine country in 1995, she decided to move to California in 1997.
Lori’s experience in California began as the assistant winemaker for St. Francis Winery & Vineyards, and she was then promoted to winemaker. After seven years on staff at St. Francis, Lori decided to look for an opportunity at a smaller winery with a family feel, and joined Lolonis Winery. She worked as a consultant for a couple of years, until she heard about the opportunity at The Rubin Family Vineyards and Winery. Lori felt that this would be a unique and invaluable opportunity to manage the daily operations of a winery.
In 2016, Lori earned her Wine Executive MBA degree, from Sonoma State University’s School of Business and Economic. One June 1, 2016, Lori also fulfilled all of the requirements for having the Rubin Family Vineyards become a Certified California Sustainable Wine Growing company.
Lori’s role is multi-faceted as operations manager. She employs a “safety first” approach, by participating in assurance programs regarding all winery and plant equipment; and working closely with her wine production team, by coaching and implementing the winery’s safety training. Management of compliance reporting for water and waste water systems, as well as overseeing the implementation of The Rubin Family Vineyards and Winery’s green business initiatives, are all part of her daily assignments. Lori also supervises all bottling line operations, maintains an acute knowledge of machinery capacity, and develops solutions for efficient utilization.
Additionally, on the Ron Rubin Dream Team, Lori Knapp’s duties include interfacing with the quality assurance team to guarantee the highest degree of a final quality wine, as well as developing new and superior methods. In her role as operations manager, she is also developing good working relationships with outside vineyards and suppliers.
